The mystery pf Externsteine
Externsteine is located in the woods near Paderborn in the middle of Germany. It is a sandstone rock formation which consists of a number of huge pillars, some of them standing in water. It seems to be a whim of nature, although such formations hardly exist in the region. The rocks are to a large extend worked by men. The marks show that the estate has been used for centuries, mainly for ceremonial purposes. The carved temple on top of one of the pillars is a convincing argument. A round hole in the outer wall of that temple aligns with the earliest sunbeams at the day of the solstice. Externsteine attracts a lot of visitors on the day of the summer solstices and winter solstices.

The manmade marks in Externsteine are difficult to date, though they certainly go back as far as the stone age.
