The
Osirion is a peculiar building alongside the temple of Seti I at Abydos, Suhag, 45
km to the north of Luxor
in Egypt.
It was discovered in 1902 by Petrie and Murray. The construction was
built several meters lower than the temple of Seti I
next to it, which suggests earlier construction. The building is
unusual because it has a very different style, and is made of
enormous granite stones, some weighing more than 100 tons. The surfaces
of the stones are ‘polished smooth’ and seem to be
made with machined precision. There are no inscriptions on the stone
blocks, apart from some crude signs that seem to have been added during
later times.
When
the temple was discovered, it was completely filled with sand. Today,
the foundations of the temple are below the underground water level,
which has led to the decay of the stones because of the minerals in the
soil. The mysterious architecture, the huge
granite blocks, the extremely smooth surfaces and the absence of signs
or drawings makes one wonder who built this temple.
The
large temple
of Seti
I in front of the Osirion contains the famous wall sculpture with the
kings list and the lintel with hieroglyphs
that look like airplanes and helicopters.
