Mycene lies in upcountry Greece in the Pelepones. It is a
curious place since it is neither a city, village, fortress nor temple. It lies
on top of a hillock in several stages. But the ruins do not indicate the
existence of beautiful buildings or palaces in ancient
times.
Only the gate makes an impression through the carved lions above the
entrance, which are the reason behind the name Lions Gate. Most of the complex
consists of tumbled walls built from rough pieces of stone. The paths which lead
up cover rocks and harsh floor. Whoever lived here didn't make it easy for
themselves. But to the attentive visitor, this complex is surrounded by an air
of mysteriousness, because there are remarkable things to be seen that can
hardly be explained. For example, the rock along the path that leads to the Lion
Gate has been cut off at a near perfect angle. There are large blocks of stone
with a lot of gravel, evidently sawn and
polished with little effort. The inhabitants were apparently capable of
highly advanced stone working techniques, but it is unclear who
they were and when this construction took place.
