In the north of Yemen, about 120 km to the east of Sana’a,
near the village Marib, an ancient dam is still to be seen. Archeologists have
discovered that the first dam started back in 2000 BC, though many repairs and
rebuildings occured in later times. Today there are still the remains at the
north side and south side, together with spillway channels and sluices. The dam
has a width of about 580
meters, was originally 4 meters and later
16
meters in height, which initiated the irrigation of a wide
area by which the kingdom of Sheba could
flourish.
The exact location of the northern side is 15 24’11,12”N, 45
15’58,06”E , and of the southern side 15 23’51,28”N, 45 16’07,64”E.
In
his book “Are we children of the gods?” describes Von Däniken extensively this
mysterious dam where he rightfully points at the advanced engineering skills:
even without cement the huge walls were capable to resist the enormous water
mass and guide through canals to the fields.
Today there is a modern dam, a few yards upstream.
