The mystery of Baalbek in Lebanon
Baalbek in Lebanon is one of the most mysterious places on earth. Here in the heart of the Lebanon, ancient builders crafted the largest and heaviest stones on earth.
In later times, Romans built a temple on top of these stones. Below, we find blocks of about 10 metres long, 5 metres high and a 3 – 4 metres deep. They weigh more than 450 tons each. Nine blocks are visible on the northern side, 9 on the southern side and 6 on the western side.
There are 3 even bigger blocks above these megaliths, weighing approximately 1000 tons each. These are called the Trilithons.
An even more famous stone lies in the quarry nearby. It is the largest of all, weighing approximately 1200 tons. This is the largest stone ever crafted in the world. This stone is not yet finished and is still a part of the rock.

The mystery here is that even today, hardly any machinery exists to transport, lift and position such enormous blocks in such a restricted area. And of course, it is unimaginable that in ancient times people could have done this with manpower and ropes.

It is clear that no man could ever have done this. Why these huge megaliths were shaped is still a question to be answered. Also, the precise dates are unknown. The only thing that is certain is that none of the inhabitants of the time, like the Romans, ever claimed to have erected this megalithic structure. It must therefore be hundreds, if not thousands of years older than the Roman temple.
