Ancient
Jericho,
located at Tell es-Sultan, just north of the Dead Sea in Palestine,
is a settlement which is believed to be the oldest city in the World.
At about 200 meters
below sea level, it is also the lowest city in the world. (though the
word ‘city’ maybe somewhat overdone for the site).
The
earliest human habitation took place in about 9000 BC, though the first
permanent settlers came in 8000-7000 BC. The site then consisted of a
few walls and a tower, and measures about 40 hectares.
The
Bible refers to the destruction of Jericho by
Josua, the successor of Moses, by walking around the city 7 times by
which the walls came trembling down. Collapsed mudbrick wall have
indeed been excavated, as well as jars full of grain. However, the date
of this final destruction is still disputed by the archaeologists.
The
development of cities is strongly related to the invention and
development of agriculture which enabled the establishment of larger
populations. However, mysteriously, the construction of Jericho
predates the invention of agriculture. It is likewise a mystery why the
city needed walls. Who could be an enemy in a rather empty world?
