The mystery of machu Picchu in Peru

High in the Andes, to the north of the city Cusco, hidden on a sharp mountain top lays the mysterious old city Machu Picchu. The Inca’s lived there but its construction period is unknown. Because of the limited space, only around thousand people could have lived here.

The city remained beyond the reach of the Spaniards and was discovered only recently in 1911 (by the American explorer Bingham). The city encompasses houses, palaces, squares and terraces. The centre is the square with the strange Intihuatana stone of which the function is subject to speculation.

Another remarkable construction is the so-called Temple of the Sun which is actually a wall encircling a rough rock. Why this spot is so important that it should be encircled by a half-open wall is also unknown. Already mysterious due to its topographical situation in the Andes mountains, Machu Picchu is particularly mysterious because of its unsurpassed stone technology. We find precisely fitting hard rock stones, stones with multiple interwoven surfaces and rock manipulated as if it was soft as butter. And all this done in an impossible place at an inconvenient height.

Hence, the big question is: Who was able to apply such advanced technology? How did they do this? And why here?

More about this mysterious place in “Verborgen geheimen van de mensheid”.

The Sun Temple is probably the most remarkable building in Machu Picchu.
The Sun Temple is probably the most remarkable building in Machu Picchu. It doesn’t resemble a ‘temple’ as a place of worship. The wall encloses a strange rocky outcrop, as if it were extremely ‘sacred’. Nobody knows its purpose.

This mysterious wall with the three windows is flanked by niches of comparable dimensions and symbolizes, according to tradition, the doors through which the gods stepped down when they came to the earth

This sharp point, the Intihuatana, is located at the top of a steep hill.
This sharp point, the Intihuatana, is located at the top of a steep hill. There is all kinds of speculation as to what the purpose was of this modelled rock, but a convincing answer is yet to be found.

The wall between the building and the rock is made of blocks that precisely fit the rock.

The wall between the building and the rock is made of blocks that precisely fit the rock. This is an indication that this wall was built by means of a technique comparable to clay modelling technique.

The Sun Temple is situated on top of the so-called Royal Tomb.

The Sun Temple is situated on top of the so-called Royal Tomb. But this tomb doesn’t look like a grave at all. The most mysterious part is certainly the ‘stairs’ and the wall behind it is made of closely fitting stones. That wall is held in place by the rock facades. It is a mystery how they were able to fit these stones between these rock walls.
