Pisac is a mysterious site, about 20 kilometers to the
northeast of Cusco in Peru,
and only to be reached after a tough walk through rough terrain. It consists of
a number of high-tech stone buildings and is situated on top of a spur of the Andes mountains, while another hill is overseeing it.
The buildings consist of seamless big stones, mostly
rectangular but often polygone. Like in Machu
Picchu, there is a so-called temple of the Sun: a wall
of perfectly fitting stone which encircles a curious rock. What is so special
about that rock that such an advanced wall had to be constructed to protect it?
An Intihuatana can also be found here, not one high on
top of a hill but simply on the floor alongside the Temple of the Sun. One may suspect that an
Intihuatana is not a ‘holy’or ‘astronomical’ construct after all.
The techniques that were applied in Pisac are true
examples of ‘high-tech’: seamless wall, straight curring through hard rock,
moulding with hard rock and ‘snow-digging’ in hard rock.
