The mystery of the Pulemelei pyramid
The Pulemelei pyramid is the largest structure in Polynesia. It is located on the tiny Samoan island of Savaii, the island which is regarded by Polynesian people as the cradle of Polynesian civilization. It is about 14 metres high and roughly 65 x 60 metres square. It is built on a stone base and is aligned according to the cardinal directions. It was hidden by the jungle but recently cleared by an excavation team from the Thor Heyerdahl Research Centre in Norway. The pyramid consists of rough basalt stones about the size of a football. No processed stones or a burial tomb have been discovered, and according to legend, it was built by the great god Togaloa. Settlements dating to ca. 1000–1600 AD are associated with the site, but the actual date of its construction is unknown. Its original purpose and the identity of its creators remains a mystery.

The Pulemelei pyramid is, in fact, a large pile of small stones. This type of pyramid is similar to the one on the island  of Tenerif in the Atlantic Ocean, near the village of Guimar.

At some time there was intense heat in this nook. Some of the stones have been cast together due to the heat. Presumably the hole was a subterranean oven.
